Reuse-a-shoe

Must old sneakers go to the landfill? Maybe not. Nike runs a recycling program to give sneakers a new life. The Reuse-a-Shoe program, operating on four continents, collects worn-out athletic shoes of any brand and shreds their fabric, foam, and rubber parts for use in sports fields, tennis courts, and playgrounds. Since 1993 Nike has used more than 19 million donated shoes to help create some 250 playing surfaces for schools and community centers. (via Sierra’s shared items in Google Reader)
